The Shard

The Shard lies on the South Bank in the city’s vibrant new London Bridge Quarter, and is set to “redefine” London’s skyline. The “vertical city” will be the tallest building in Western Europe, at 1,016ft tall, and will house offices, restaurants, luxury residencies and a top-class hotel. On such a high-profile build, with high volumes of foot traffic anticipated, it was essential to strike the balance between providing access and preventing security and fire threats.

Scope of Works

Door Group designed and installed Powershield steel fire doors for the risers of the Spire core, above the viewing galleries, in anticipation of high visitor numbers.

Innovative projection hinges were integrated into the steel doorsets, allowing sub-contractor, EMTEC, to apply a surface cladding panel to the door, leveling it flush to the wall and creating a clean, modern finish.

Working with the specialist sub-contractors, Door Group was able to deliver products both suitable for the high security needs, and in keeping with the sharp design principles, of the iconic “vertical city”.
